چکیده

Star formation rates in galaxies are frequently estimated using the Balmer line fluxes of their H II regions. However, these can be systematically underestimated because dust competes for the absorption of Lyman continuum photons in the ionized gas. This factor cannot be neglected, and in this paper we present theoretical correction factors in a simple analytic form in order to allow observers to take this effect into account when estimating star formation rates from Balmer lines. These factors scale as the product of the ionization parameter, U, and the nebular O/H abundance ratio, both of which can now be derived from the observation of bright nebular line ratios. The correction factors are only somewhat dependent upon the photoelectron production by grains, but are very sensitive to the presence of complex PAH-like carbonaceous molecules in the ionized gas, providing that these can survive in such an environment.

The Origin of E+a Galaxies

1. E+A Mystery E+A galaxies are galaxies with strong Balmer absorption lines and with no significant emission in [OII] or Hα lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines shows that these galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last 1 Gyr. At the same time, these galaxies do not show any sign of ongoing star formation as indicated by the lack of [OII] or Hα emission lines. The...

Are E+A Galaxies Dusty-Starbursts?: VLA 20cm Radio Continuum Observation

E+A galaxies are characterized as a galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [OII] or Hα emission lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines means that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1-1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of [OII] or Hα emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any on-going star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are ...

Improved Templates for Photometric Redshifts of Submm Sources

There is growing evidence that some star-forming galaxies at z > 1 are characterized by high efficiencies and specific star formation rates. In the local universe, these traits are shared by “active” Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) with compact and dense star-forming regions. The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of these BCDs are dominated by young massive star clusters, embedded in a co...

Lyman Continuum Extinction by Dust in H Ii Regions of Galaxies

We examine Lyman continuum extinction (LCE) in H II regions by comparing infrared fluxes of 49 H II regions in the Galaxy, M31, M33, and the LMC with estimated production rates of Lyman continuum photons. A typical fraction of Lyman continuum photons that contribute to hydrogen ionization in the H II regions of three spiral galaxies is . 50 %. The fraction may become smaller as the metallicity ...

Direct measurement of the supernova rate in starburst galaxies

Supernovae play a key role in the dynamics, structure, and chemical evolution of galaxies. The massive stars that end their lives as supernovae live for short enough times that many are still associated with dusty star formation regions when they explode, making them difficult to observe at visible wavelengths. In active star forming regions (galactic nuclei and starburst regions), dust extinti...
